Tips to Make Traveling with Your Pet a Joy

There seems to be plenty of reasons not to travel with your pet. However, with an understanding of the potential hazards you can both have a great time.

Pets that spend the majority of their lives indoors do not respond well to changes in their routine, or environment. Travel presents the owner with the dilemma of leaving their beloved pet behind vs. dealing with the inevitable stress that traveling is sure to put their pet through. Dogs present the biggest dilemma.

People seldom realize that their pets often sense when it is time to travel (with or without them). They often work themselves into an intestinal frenzy days in advance. Hunting dogs, show dogs, working dogs can all experience pre-travel, travel, and performance stress.

Unfamiliar surroundings mean a wide variety of new smells and noises to be processed. These are all forms of stress and often result in diarrhea or vomiting, and sometimes both.

FOOD AND WATER: If you are unable to locate the exact same food your pet eats at home, the new food is likely to upset their GI tract. Depending on the water quality, municipalities may use different chemicals to treat it. Best to give your pet bottled water, and change it daily.

LODGINGS AND RENTAL CARS: Not everyone who travels takes great care of their pets; neither are all traveling pets healthy. Dealing with the after math of flea ridden and sickly pets is a major reason why car rental companies and hotels are reluctant to accept them.

Time lost cleaning up and deodorizing means lost rental revenue. Out of necessity, animal friendly hotels and car rental agencies could be using strong pesticides, insecticides, deodorants, and disinfectants that are also toxic to your pet. This exposure often results in diarrhea and vomiting.

PET WALK AREAS: How safe is that walk area or nearby park? Even if other pet walkers are careful to pick up after their pets, some fecal residue remains. Your pet is likely to smell it, possibly taste it and will likely step in it, getting some between its pads. Later your dog or cat will lick his paws, and could be ingesting pathogens, viruses, heartworm eggs

These areas may be over sprayed with pesticides, or not sprayed enough.

EXPOSURE: Air quality, unfamiliar noises, dramatic temperature changes, food, water, rental cars, the lodging, and the walk areas your cat or dog is breathing and walking in can all cause stress- some physical, some emotional- all are potential causes of GI upset.

PREPARATION IS THE KEY: It is almost inevitable that if you travel with your pets that their GI tracts will become upset. What is in your pet travel first aid kit?You do have one, right?

If SBOs are not yet a part of your pets daily diet, there is no time like the present to introduce them. SBOs are the missing link to optimizing GI health. Given several days in advance of travel, SBOs will prevent problems that could make your trip less enjoyable for both of you.

The good news is that if you take the proper precautions, both you, and your pet, can have a great time.

International Travel Tips For The Best Family Vacations – Part 2

Traveling abroad has it’s own rewards and challenges and it’s good to think and plan ahead for any trip outside the boundaries of your own country if you don’t want unpleasant surprises to crop up. In Part 1 of this article series we covered several tips on what paperwork may be needed as you travel, how to prepare for driving an auto in a foreign country, medical insurance concerns and much more. Now here are more international travel tips that can help you have the best family vacations while you are abroad:

* Most major credit cards are often accepted in foreign countries, but just be sure that the ones you have can be used successfully everywhere you intend to go. It may also be a good idea to notify your credit card companies in advance that you are leaving the country and how long you plan to be gone just so they do not flag your account and deny charges due to suspicion of fraudulent activity.

* Credit cards are also beneficial to use in many cases since the credit card companies will handle all conversion rates for you, which can save you a lot of money because of not having to make those kind of complicated money conversion calculations on your own whenever you buy anything.

* Try to drink bottled water as much as you can to avoid sickness while on the trip. Water quality can vary considerably from one country or even one area to another, so protect yourself by drinking as much bottled water as you can while on the trip. And avoid putting ice cubes in your drinks as they are usually made with local water and will melt in your drink.

* If you have some health concerns that require treatment, be sure to carry a copy of your medical history along with you in case it may be necessary to get treatment while you are away.

* If you have food allergies, find out how you pronounce the words to describe that food in that country’s language so you can be sure to avoid those foods while you are on your trip.

* Remember that Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for any treatment given outside the US, so determine in advance if additional coverage is needed and purchase trip insurance before you leave in that case.

* If you carry cash while away, it’s often a good idea to keep it in a security belt rather than a wallet that is in your pocket. There are many pickpockets in foreign countries that are tremendously skilled in separating you from your money if it isn’t well guarded.

Cancun safety – is Cancun safe for travel?

There are a great many number of bad news coming out of Mexico related to crimes and drugs, and the increase in the crime rates.  The number of bad news has dramatically increased in the last year. But still, Cancun is a great vacation spot, and it is very safe, as long as we take some precautions.  Here are the most important Cancun safety points to make your next travel to Cancun, Mexico as great as it could be:

Don’t travel outside the tourist area’s light yourself – If you are not familiar with the area, stick with the established tours, which are reasonably priced.  If you are staying in the Cancun Hotel Zone, book your tour right from the hotel; although outside the hotels, you can find better deals for the same tours!  So for example, there are great tours to Xel-Ha and Chichen Itza if you are interested.  We did not have problems when we traveled to Cancun and rented a car, and that was two years ago.  I think the situation now requires a bit more caution because of the general situation in Mexico. For females, stay in the Hotel Zone especially at nights, and go around in a crowd.  We all hear stories about drugs that can be slipped into drinks, females getting ride from unlicensed cabs and getting into trouble, etc.  So don’t do it.  Don’t drink too much either, and stay with your friends.  Even better, stick to the Hotel Zone and you should be fine, as the standards are pretty high there.  Also remember the legal drinking age in Cancun: 18.
Be careful with their drinking water:  Well, that is a cliche, isn’t it.  But it is good to be safe and stick to bottled water whenever possible.  If you are in a place that does not feel safe, then stick to bottled drinks, e.g. beer from bottle (or can).  I have found the Hotel Zone to be generally safe for drinks; I would be more worried in the city, or in outlaying areas.  It is better to be safe than sorry.

Cancun safety should be on your mind when traveling to the paradise.  It is no different from traveling to any other place, you have to know what you are doing. Be safe when you travel to Cancun.
